materialbank – University of Applied Sciences, Potsdam, Germany , December, 2011

Precious Pieces handcrafted Washi parchments were archived in the materialbank, part of the library of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam in Germany which opened as resource for professionals and students throughout Europe.

The Material Bank Potsdam is an archive of materials in the library of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam in Germany. It is available to design and architecture students of every university in Potsdam and Berlin and also to professional designers and architects. As a pilot project, the management and expansion of the collection is being undertaken by librarians as well as two tutors of the department of design. Fundamental, innovative and environmentally-friendly materials can be searched in a database system, browsed on the shelves of the library and can be borrowed for presentations.Designers need more than just the written word, designers need knowledge of the material which they design. Materiality is a language in which the designer should be proficient, because it is new materials that have made new design or new architecture possible. Todays students are designers and architect of tomorrow and therefor good influencers/ opinion leaders. (quoted from Material Bank News Letter)
